They are not "identical twins," but they have the same passion for the Garlic Festival and love to share their food and fun with family and friends. Their passion for garlic runs deep. Gene Sakahara has gone full circle with garlic, starting in the garlic fields as a youngster, working in the garlic processing plant while in college, and serving as President of Garlic Festival XIII. Likewise, Sam Bozzo is always ready to cook with garlic. He gained his culinary expertise through restaurant ownership and cooking demonstrations. He also served as President of Garlic Festival XII. The popular duo has made lasting contributions to the Garlic Festival, including a handful of tasty Gourmet Alley dishes. At the 1999 Garlic Festival, SakaBozzo debuted their Fried Garlic Chicken Tri-Colori over Polenta on Gourmet Alley. For the 2003 Garlic Festival, their featured dish was Ginger Garlic Chicken Stir-Fry, which remains a perennial favorite. At the 2004 Garlic Festival, SakaBozzo created the Garlic Fried Baloney Sandwich, which debuted at Gordon Biersch, famous for their garlic fries, in San Jose, California. SakaBozzo have been featured as celebrity chefs at the Garlic Festival, Macy's, Nob Hill supermarket, the Gridley Rice Festival, and many other food festivals. Internationally, they have been featured at the Takko Machi Beef and Garlic Festival in Takko Machi, Japan, and the Sorrento / Sorentino's Restaurant Garlic Festival in Edmonton, Canada. SakaBozzo have been guest speakers and chefs on KBHK TV Channel 44 in San Francisco, National Japanese TV, KSBW Channel 8 Salinas/Monterey, and CBC TV and Radio in Canada. Radio audiences have listened to SakaBozzo on KABL with Mike Cleary, KGO Radio with Gene Burns, WGN, the BBC, and numerous other stations in cities such as San Diego and Phoenix. SakaBozzo also prepared garlic dishes during two Garlic Festivals on the nationally televised show "CBS This Morning" with Harry Smith and Paula Zahn. Currently, SakaBozzo perform cooking demonstrations for the national cooking magazine Taste of Home in their "Slice of California" tour, delighting visitors from across the United States with a taste of Gilroy Garlic Festival foods and the Taste of Home cookbook. Gene Sakahara and Sam Bozzo are both residents of Gilroy, California, home of the world famous Gilroy Garlic Festival, where they made their careers as educators. Gene Sakahara is retired, but continues to serve as a Consultant and an Administrative Coach with the University of California at Santa Cruz New Teacher Center/New Administrator Program. He has served as Assistant Superintendent, Human Resources; Director of Curriculum and Instruction; and principal at three Gilroy schools. He has been honored with Gilroy's Educator of the Year Award and was a national nominee for Distinguished Elementary Principal. Sam Bozzo retired as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources at the Monterey County Office of Education and has worked as Director of School Facilities in Gilroy Unified School District. He has been honored with the state Association of California School Administrators Classified Manager of the Year Award and Gilroy's Man of the Year Award. Both Gene and Sam have been nominees for the KSBW Channel 8 Jefferson Awards for their contributions to the Gilroy community.
